Bullying in Sports: The Injuries We Don’t See

Provides an increased awareness on bullying and the various types of behavior that is often associated within sports. Coach Randy’s presentation identifies the bully culture that exists within sports, identifies the types of bullies (Bully Coach, Bully Parent & Bully Player), identifies warning signs of being bullied and/or aggressive behavior, lists effective strategies for dealing with conflict and prejudice, and encourages coaches to empower players to become “Upstanders” and leaders in their school community.

Internet and Technology Safety – A Road Map to Protecting Children

In today’s technological age, school faculty faces a daunting task of teaching and mentoring children free of constant negative influence. Access to undesirable people and information is prevalent and extremely difficult to monitor. This is exacerbated by the fact that most kids are more proficient and comfortable with technology than adults. Consequently, faculty members need to educate themselves on the danger today’s children face from this constantly connected online world.

In an effort to educate and empower teachers and other faculty to keep a better watch over children the following presentation is being offered: Internet and Technology Safety – A Road Map to Protecting Children. During this 60 to 90 minute presentation, faculty will learn of the following danger areas:

Teen Dating Violence & Healthy Relationships

The state of NJ recently passed a law to help address the prevalence of dating violence and the issues surrounding forming healthy relationships. One out of four adolescents report physical, emotional, or sexual abuse from a dating partner. Unhealthy, abusive, or violent relationships can cause both short-term and long-term effects, including poor school performance, substance abuse, depression and anxiety and suicide attempts. The law requires schools to address these issues within the school curriculum and develop content. During this presentation, staff will learn:

Coming Out 101

What does it mean when someone comes out of the closet? What is that experience like for many LGBTQ people? Learn about coming out identity models and participate in discussions and activities that will provide insight to the coming out process so that you can better support LGBTQ people.

LGBTQ Programming

Transgender 101

“Transgender” is an umbrella term used to describe a wide range of identities but what do those identities mean and how can we best support our transgender students? Participants in this foundational workshop will leave with a better understanding of transgender terminology, the issues that affect transgender students and their families, and will be able to identify ways they can create inclusive spaces for trans people on their campuses. Bathrooms, names, and gender pronouns will also be discussed in this session.

Sex vs. Gender vs. Sexuality

Sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation are separate identities that are oftentimes misunderstood and confusing to folks. In this workshop, we will start to dispel the stereotypes associated with with sex, gender, and sexuality and gain greater insight to these identities through individual mapping. Sex, gender, and sexuality terminology are also covered in this interactive session.

Behavior Management & Special Needs Trainings

Functional Behavior Assessments

Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) are comprehensive behavioral evaluations that provide valuable information pertaining to a child’s behavior and it’s affect on their ability to learn and function in school, home and community settings. This workshop will present a user-friendly template of an FBA, including all key components (observation, data collection, parent/staff interviews, review of key documents, summary, and recommendations). Discussion on the use of FBA’s to guide behavioral and academic programming will be incorporated.

Behavior Intervention Plans

Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) are to be included in student IEP’s who require ongoing behavioral support within a school setting. BIP’s can prove very effective in home and community settings as well. An effective Behavior Planning model and template will be shared. The model includes the main components of a comprehensive plan including baseline rates of behavior, antecedent strategies, the treatment plan, data collection methods and relevant research.

Applied Behavior Analysis: A Universal Set of Guiding Principles

The principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) have proven themselves effective in educating and modifying behavior in children diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. The fact of the matter is that these principles can be universally applied to foster functional, meaningful change in all individuals in varied educational, home and community settings. The workshop will define ABA, discuss the core principles, the methods for determining the functions of behavior and the importance of data collection and tracking behavior.

Effective School-Wide Behavior Management Programs

Positive Behavior Supports in schools and classrooms are an effective component to promoting appropriate behavior and decreasing inappropriate behavior. This workshop focuses on fostering appropriate behavior through a systematic program that utilizes the principle of Positive Reinforcement to “reward” appropriate behaviors. We will touch on the core components of reinforcement including determination of reinforcers of appropriate potency and ensuring that reinforcers are provided at an appropriate frequency. We will learn about token (generalized) reinforcement. Sample class-wide and school-wide systems will be shared.

Understanding AUTISM

The most recent edition of the DSM has modified the definition of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This workshop will define ASD and share the criteria for diagnosis. Common characteristics of the disability will be discussed as well as some effective educational and behavioral interventions.

An Overview of Behavioral Disabilities

Students diagnosed as having a behavioral disability have special needs needs that require specialized behavioral intervention and support. We will identify and discuss varying behavioral diagnoses including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and varying Anxiety Disorders. Current trends in addressing needs of these students will be shared, including appropriate programming and intervention.

Behavior Management in the Classroom

All classrooms benefit from the implementation of Positive Behavior Supports to promote appropriate student behavior. Tiered systems of support provide intervention at all levels from least to most intensive. We will discuss the hierarchy, ranging from an overarching class-wide system, to individual Behavior Intervention Plans for students. We will identify ways to determine the function of behavior and the role of reinforcement and punishment in changing behavior.

Positive Behavioral Supports

The implementation of Positive Behavior Supports is the primary approach to teaching new, appropriate behavior to students in school settings. Unfortunately, many schools still rely primarily on the use of punishment to address challenging behavior. While there is a place for punishment in schools and in life, this presentation will focus on fostering a culture of “positivity” and the use of Positive Reinforcement to change behavior. We will learn about determining the function of behavior and the development and implementation of specific, positive strategies to change behavior.

Comparing the Use of Positive Reinforcement and Punishment in Effective Behavior Change

The use of positive interventions or punishment can foster behavior change. This workshop will compare the two approaches, define what each means and how they work to change behavior. We will introduce the principle of Extinction (planned ignoring) and it’s role in changing behavior. Finally we will discuss the importance of developing behavioral interventions that provide the best opportunity for true behavior change over time.

Self-Injurious Behaviors

This training will review Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and develop a greater awareness of who is at risk; NSSI among adolescents and teens; causes of NSSI; and best practices for detection, intervention, and treatment of NSSI.

Turn Around that Student with Challenging Behaviors: Strategies for Success (General Education)

The law requires that all students with special needs be educated in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This means that many students with special behavioral needs are entitled to be educated in inclusive settings. At times, their behavior may interfere with the ability for them or others to learn to their potential or may draw negative attention to them. Teachers and support staff need not despair! We will discuss the importance of identifying target behaviors, understanding why they happen and developing appropriate interventions to change the behavior. The presentation focuses on the challenges that come with addressing behavior in a general education classroom.

Why Does this Behavior Continue to Happen? Understanding the Functions of Behavior

The exhibition of aberrant behavior can pose challenges in any number of settings including home, school and community. Most often, parents, teachers and caregivers act quickly to implement intervention that may or may not get at the root cause of the behavior. This presentation will speak to the importance of determine the true “Function” of challenging behaviors in order to address them at the core and affect meaningful behavior change. Methods of Functional Behavior Assessment will be shared from basic to more comprehensive.

NJ Department of Education Mandated Trainings

Potentially Missing/Abused Children Reporting

Training on procedures for the early detection of missing, abused, or neglected children through notification of, reporting to, and cooperation with the appropriate law enforcement and child welfare authorities.

Law Enforcement Operations

This training will review the policies and procedures established in the subchapter on law enforcement operations for substances, weapons and safety and the exchange of information regarding the practices of the education and law enforcement.

Mandatory Gang Awareness Training for School Administrators

This training will satisfy the annual requirements as set forth by the Office of the Attorney General on the topic of gangs and gang activity.

School Safety & Crisis Preparation and Management

This training will enable employees to recognize and appropriately respond to safety and security concerns, including emergencies and crises, consistent with the district board of education’s plans procedures and mechanisms for school safety and security. School Crisis Management planning and preparation training and consultation is also available.
